For users who have existing forums they wish to upgrade, here is the patch.
(fileserv.myupb.com/mods_updates_fixes/upb2beta1_patch002.zip) ChangeLog: |
In topic "UPB 2 BETA 1 Patch 003 Release"
|
|
A number of bugs and annoyance are addressed in our third patch of UPB 2 BETA 1 version. The most important ones dealing with the registration e-mail, deleting topics, updating the whos online portal, and correcting the banned users and word filter portals. For a complete changelog, see below.
Sorry for the delay of this patch. There are still a number of other areas of UPB we're looking into as far as errors, mainly the private messaging system. Thank you for being patient. And as always, by downloading this patch, you agree to the terms and conditions displayed in our fileserver index. Download upb2beta1_patch003.zip Changelog: |

The fourth patch for UPB 2.0 BETA 1 addresses an issue with the TDB creating duplicate identical tables, as well as adding a new double pipe syntax to the query function. It also contains the rewritten search.php, as well as a repairing the timezone feature, which now works after you logout and login again (otherwise it defaults to GMT).
There are still a number of known bugs which are not addressed in this new patch, including but not limiting to the following: And as always, by downloading this patch, you agree to the terms and conditions displayed in our fileserver index. Download upb2beta1_patch004.zip CHANGELOG ============= |

We have forcefully turned off registered_globals in the includes/inc/func.inc.php. What you are describing sounds like you don't have SMTP e-mail configured. To confirm, create and upload a file named phpinfo.php, with the contents [code=phpinfo.php]<?php phpinfo(); ?>[/code], and copy/paste the URL on this topic. |

The next beta version is closed. Reply here to signup for it. If you know some or a lot of PHP, that's great. We recommend not upgrading your existing UPB version with this version. We recommend testing it on your local machine (your computer), and use your data directory from your existing UPB. The new group permissions are safe to use. We're releasing this closed to work out bugs and holes in it. How is that Tim? ![]() |

A bug was discovered in UPB v2.2.5 that may exist is previous versions. This bug prevented bulletin boards that met the SMTP-enabled criteria to have the bookmarking or the monitoring topic feature available. The patch below (kudos to Jono) addresses this problem. This patch is intended for version 2.2.5. If you have an earlier version, please upgrade to version 2.2.5 before applying this patch. This patch *should* be included in the next release. On a programmer's note, one thing I like about SQL that TDB doesn't have is the ability to query and select which columns or fields you want, because sometimes you don't need all of them (like the users table--you don't always need all the information.

I think what he means is having a more noticable divider... |

Well I wouldn't want to perminently add that divider to UPB, and I wouldn't want to add a option in the config settings panel. But maybe the future skin system will allow users to add this... maybe... |
In topic "Inoperability"
|
|
So you want to be able to use user credentials in your website outside the forum? Hm... I hate to burst your bubble, but what you're describing is a portal, like myAtom. The only difference being that you want to use a more complicated system of using two different kinds of databases, something that's not efficient. It is actually very easy to incorporate login credentials into your website, because it only uses an if-then statement to check to see if you are logged in. Study login.php. It will help you in your endeavours to be logged in outside the forum. |
In topic "MOVED: opensourcecms.com"
|
|
Topic was moved to forum : General Chit-Chat redirecting... |
In topic "Topic Monitoring"
|
|
Well... I intentionally made it like that, or else on larger forums, everytime someone replied, everyone would retrieve a copy of the reply, so it's be sending out way to many e-mails. For example, If I made a topic, and ten people monitors it, then there are 20 posts in one night, each person gets 20 e-mails next morning, and the server sends out 200 e-mails, when 20 e-mails would have worked.
Never fear, I (or Tim, I'm not sure who.. lol) added a option to newpost.php (in the next version), so when you post a reply, you can just check the option to monitor it, saving you a couple of clicks. That's the best I can do. I don't really want 200 e-mails being sent out when 10% of that will do. |
|
Like I said, in the next version, you can checkmark a box to monitor a topic when you reply, so it's not really different from what you just said, except the 24 hours thing, which would be harder to do, because you never know if there are users on in 24 hours (to run the script)... |
|
Hey All, Rebles here. I'm the one who actually wrote the system. This feature is implemented, however, it appears there is a bug in the /includes/class/posts.class.php, line 104-5. UPB will NOT give you an option to monitor this topic if it determines that your web host does not support STMP mail. I know ours does, but i don't see a monitor option, so there must be a bug in determining the $_CONFIG['email_mode'] variable. |
|
YEAAH. Awesome patch Jono. Quick work. Glad to see we didn't lose features with new releases--something that PLAGUED v1.9x before we had proper revision control (trunk/branch/tags). Thanks! |
|
If you're having problems with topic monitoring, be sure to post it in the right forum, as this forum is only limited to suggestions for UPB. I agree with you pete917, that the monitoring functionality needs to be expended, only it's not at the top of the list of things to do right now ^_^;; --Rebles |

Um... I think Fraser added some functionability where information typed in newpost.php or newpm.php would be cached (in the header.php). However it might have been overwritten during the 2.0 code conversions. |

[number]In the FINAL version of 2.0, you will have complete control to modify the HTML all your want without having to open a single PHP file.[/number]
[number]Actually this WAS implemented in a previous version by Fraser (God I love that kid, lol), however was overwritten during the 2.0 code conversion. When I have time, I will look through Fraser's secret never-been-released v1.97 files, and extract the data! (when I have time of course @_@).[/number] [number]Hmmm... now that I think about it, I guess it wouldn't be too hard... But I'm not sure if we can spare the time to impliment it (We are waaay too busy!)[/number] [number]Again, Good old Fraser actually developed this in v1.97 (omg that version is really good!), unfortunately was not convered to 2.0. If you use FireFox, spell checker is built in to the browser ![]() FYI Spell Checkers are really nasty to implement. If we tried to implement spell checker without server side support, that's even messier! We'd have to keep add a dictionary of all the known english words with the forum! That's a lot bytes! ![]() |

Yikes, Username changeable sounds nasty... considering usernames are stored for each post the user makes.... I cringe thinking about it O_O |
|
As it stands, the user's name is stored in the topic & post. If you implemented a LEFT JOIN RIGTH JOIN (I have no idea what's the difference between left and right..) TDB would have to open and parse more files and data. IMHO Because a user rarely ever wants to change their name, you can get better performance by simply writing the user name in post record, instead of linking it with a user ID. |
In topic "Games"
|
|
I think it's a great idea for a add-on, but I wouldn't put it in the main distro. Not everybody wants games. ![]() And I know what you're thinking, if it's an add-on, not many people will know about it, so we definitely need to work on the add-on distro portion better. (Maybe even integrate it into the admin panel). |
|
Actually what I was thinking was one new page in the admin panel, and that admin panel would simply contain an iframe to a page on our server which queried our add-on database, and devs can submit their add-ons. |
In topic "SQL COMBATIBILITY"
|
|
RE Codex, They have this. It's called PDO. It's enabled since PHP5.1. It works to abstract other database models into one format. The way it works, is if you have a MsSQL Database and you wish to use PDO with it, then you have to have the MsSQL driver registered with PDO. Luckily, since SQLite is enabled by default since PHP5 and a driver is included by default, PDO works with SQLite out of the box since PHP5.1. What do you think? |

Hey Codex, I'm not a SQL expert, but I searched the internet, and found this: Quote: So I believe the PDO query statements will be translated into the correct Database Engine Language. source: www.phpro.org/tutorials/Introduction-to-PHP-PDO.html#7 --Rebles |
Quote: Jono345 at Jul 20, 2009 12:20:57 pm @Jono! |
Quote: codex at Jul 20, 2009 1:04:46 pmHmmm If this is true, this is very unfortunate. I was planning on expanding UPB's database support by using PDO, but if it doesn't translate the queries, then I think it's pretty much useless. |
Quote: Jono345 at Jul 21, 2009 12:40:11 pm SHAAAAAREEEEE!!! @Pilot I remember Jonathan's abstraction class! I wonder if it's somewhere on the server or if I have a local copy... I'll have to check when I get home @codex It sounds like you're very knowledgeful about how to parse a SQL Query string. Um... 2 months isn't really enough time to build a customer base. Another thing you should do is calculate how many customers you need before you are in the green, and then ask yourself if you can make that many customers in 2 months. If you doubt it, you need a new strategy. A big question is advertisement. How will you spread the word? I know Yahoo just (or planning to very soon) release their new advertisement system, Google's AdSense has been working out for us (BTW Tim, we needa talk about that one!!). I'm not even going to get into the software you have to purchase / make to make those two services available, plus customer support etc. Third to last, I'd recommend partnering someone who has A LOT of money. He doesn't have to program or anything, you just need an invester, although he'll want to see profits sooner than later. Second to last, make sure you have all your software and webpages developed and tested, domain name purchased, and your Ads one button away form release, before you purchase your dedicated server. God knows you don't want to waste a day of your subscription.

I believe it depends who you ask. If you ask me, I can't give you a clear answer. Never took the time to study Ruby; PHP has worked fine for my web-based needs. You ask a friend of mine, who is an aspiring programmer, he'll tell you Ruby is the way to go. However, if you think about Ruby's history compared to PHP's history; Ruby is in his infant stages. I'm sure it will gain in popularity (even if slightly), but there is no way just how popular or unpopular it will be. Just pay attention to the statistics, and that will give you a better idea (although like always, whenever a new product his the ground, even it's in inferior to existing products, it's inevitable that it will steal a percent of market, so it's best to wait for it to tapper off or level out before declaring a victor). As for this programmer's opinion, PHP offers the versitility, security, and speed you need to run all your web apps.
EDIT: btw, JAVA is the most OO scripting to EVER exist (despite how impractical it is ) |

Hello veramer,
Thanks for your interest in UPB! I'll try to answer your questions, but a lot of them we simply don't have the answers yet (either because we haven't had the time, or we haven't gotten around to it). For the translation, we don't have an easy way to translate UPB yet. You will have to do a string replacement for the currently released version. For this version, you'll have to translate all the PHP files. That being said, we are expecting to release a template system hopefully with in at least two minor revisions. UTF-8: Yes, Unofficially UPB supports this. However some Asian languages don't seem to convert well in users' posts. You may experience similar problems. If you do, we'll see how you can fix it. system resource usage: TextDB in coding is very fast, reliable, and low on resource usage. We don't have current indicators to back up our claim tho
I hope this helps (even a little) ![]() |
|
Note about posts not accepting Turkish characters:
I think the problem lies in the UPBCoding function or the censor function (Probably the str_replace, maybe a regex would work better?) |

Note that the UPB Community is unlike any other community. We're not like PHPBB, which is very closed. If you wish to mod UPB, go ahead! We encourage it! We even have a forum and wiki page for user modifications. From time to time we invite community members to the UPB Team. These people don't necessarily have to be great programmers. We're looking from people who love UPB, and want to contribute something. On that note, if you find a bug in UPB, post it! If you know how to fix it, post that aswell! Anything to make UPB better! |
In topic "*solution* - off site avatar, new post error"
|
|
Hi All,
I was the one who designed the avatar system. You do need "allow_url_fopen" to be ON, because the mod_avatar.class.php, in the includesclass directory, uses md5_file() (or alternatively md5(file_get_contents($file))). When I wrote mod_avatar.class.php, I thought it was sufficient, however there has been numerous problems, such as, if the file is unavailable or there is a slow response, the page load takes a lot longer to load. It still functions if "allow_url_fopen" is OFF, but it is a little less efficient. Tim asked me to rewrite it, but I haven't had the time yet. If you guys have looked at the code, what do you think? |

Yes, this is completely possible. The only thing you have to figure out is how to tell the UPB is pick the correct database for the user that wants to view it. |

Oh, I was actually refering to Jono's method. A lot of forums could simply use the same PHP files, but use a different config.php, which points to a different database. |
In topic "testing zip attachment"
|
|
Do you mind going into detail with your plan? If we as a community can work out bugs like this, we won't have to rewrite the coding again.
The attachment system is the perfect example: 1) attachments are stored in the uploads folder, then 2) attachments are stored in a database to be more secure 3) ??? I really like having the files stored in a database, and maybe we could fix the reassembly sequence (which might be a bug in TextDB, which is even more important to fix). However if you develop a superior attachment system, of course we'll use it--IF it's superior ![]() |

Hmmm, I like it. We should get Tim on this and see what he thinks.
I feel kind of bad, making the upload system go from In folders -> In Database -> In folders and Database |

As for the correction tim had to insert, the reason I decided to handle memo fields like that was because a method did not exist to clean up left over garbage when the memo was changed or deleted. This way is much more efficient, with (i hope) little sacrafice to processing. I am also having trouble understanding what you mean by "chopper" too codex. And also what you mean by giving users the option to back up the thread. |
|
RE: Pilot
I created a script that calculated the directy tree sizes, which could be used to determine the size of the data directory, however that was not the intetion
RE: codex Backing up a thread into RRS format is for a different purpose, and for the original purpose, it's not too practical. However if you would like to create a Mod to do this, I sure some people will be happy
I'm still not using the purpose of resizing a string to a given length. Why? Could you give an example? As for calculating the size in bytes of a given string in the tdb, couldn't you retrieve the record and do a strlen() on the column? And again, I have to ask what the purpose is. Why? Could you give an example? |
|
The only thing I got out of your example in relation TDB 4, is loss of data. I'm not exactly why you would want to cut off ends of records or data. Also, I don't know what filter system you are talking about in the TDB. Unless you are talking about verifying a field's field type (i.e. ID, number, memo), which is in the add() function. |
|
You can modify the data before passing it as an argument to a method in the TDB. That or you could extend the TDB class, making the same methods in the extended class, then reference the original TDB method. Basically, we'd like to keep the TDB as bare with very little unnecessary coding as possible. |

Tim and I discussed it a little. He sees some value in sorting it this way, but I personally believe this will confuse n00b programmers. |
In topic "File Locking"
|
|
well the way we manage deleted records and the manor in which it is sorted has changed so that it is no longer required to "reBuild" the entire (or any part of) a table. It has a nice little recycling program (save the environment!) for deleted records, and (I don't know if Tim knew this or not) but the REF file was already formatted in such a way to allow us to sort the REF instead of the records themselves ![]() |
|
Yup. That way, two users could be editing the same file, but their changes won't overlap and overwrite one anothers'. Another thing to point out that while "string" and "number" have a set length, there is also a field type called "memo" which can be as long as you want it, but still uses set lengths, so even if two people are editing memo fields, their changes won't overlap.
And for field type "string" and "number", you can always use the tdb::editField() method to change the length. |

yeah, when I was tracking down a bug in the memo functions, it was a *flour* to try and find which memo belonged to which record, and a *flour* to piece the memos together... Tim and I have been internally discussing TDB in relation to SQL. While we didn't really agree on a concrete conclusion, I just thought I'd let you know that we are considering TDB and SQL.
That being said, we've never considered creating converters of TDB to SQL, and SQL to TDB, and, as far as I am concerned, I'll never consider it. If people want SQL, they will use SQL. There are hundreds of other forum venders out there to provide that, but only a few dozen that offer file based database forums such as UPB and TDB. And that's all I am willing to say about that, without revealing too much of our undeveloped plans ![]() |
In topic "TextDB query question"
|
|
Could you explain the functionality of "LEFT", "JOIN", and "LIMIT"? Then we can better answer your question. Sorry, Tim and I REALLY like TextDB over SQL ![]() |
|
Also, I don't know if you've discovered our wiki documentation, but it's at www.myupb.com/wiki/index.php/TextDB_Manual.
Again what Tim said, there isn't any JOIN functionality, however the LIMIT functionality is achieved through the $start and $howmany arguements in tdb::listRec(), and tdb::query() (See Documentation for the appropiate argument #. The $start argument specifies howmany records you wish to skip before starting to return. For tdb::listRec(), it would simply skip that many records, however, for tdb::query(), it will skip that many records that match the query string, making this functionality very useful for paging. As far the $howmany, it simply returns that many records after $start. Similarly to $start, tdb::listRec(), will simply return that many records after $start, whereas tdb::query() will return that many records after $start that match the query string. Anyways, I hope that wasn't too wordy and I hope that deepens your understanding of TextDB. |
|
yeah sure, we can test it for you. |

ROFLMAO!!! tdb.class.zip was outdated!? That is a riot! Also a word of warning, the tdb.class.php with UPB 2.0 BETA 1.4 (while working) is not the official release... In topic "Identical queries produce different results"

Is this with the tdb.class.php that is included with UPB 2.0 BETA 1.4? If so, I know for a fact that once you query a table, the results are cached, so that if you do the exact same query, you should get the exact same results. The exception is if you use tdb::cleanUp() or tdb::tdb(). |
![]() We strive for simplicity in our products
I'll look into that null pointer bug you get when trying to a query multiple times in a script. It probably has to do with the cached results |
|
TextDB is Tim's baby (laush @ Tim), lol... |
|
OKOKOK.... lol... I'll look into it.... ![]() |
|
Okay! So I did look into it, and confirmed my suspicions. It was a returning a NULL pointer, because the function query() was returning the wrong information afer it cached the same query results. You can find the updated version at www.fileserv.myupb.com |
|
right. Instead of creating a second FP, you could have executed tdb::cleanUp() |
|
TextDB has a similar function called tdb::cleanUp(), try that. |
|
I dunno what it is, but it looks awesome! How were you able to get around the NULL query return |
In topic "setFP query"
|
|
well you could globalize a tdb resource, with those filepointers already defined, or you could create another function "setTextDBFps(&$db)" which takes a tdb resource as it's only argument and runs the setFp() commands there.
As far as debugging, any TextDB function, that needs an fp in it's arguemtns, that you call will check to make sure you set that fp, otherwise it will generate an error. Depending how you setup TextDB to handle errors, it will either print it out or trigger an error. So you might want to check your error_report() settings. |

I've looked at Chibiguy's textSQL, and I don't think it actually interpreted SQL queries. His functions used arrays as the SQL queries and from what I can remember about SQL queries is that it is a String
Also about TextDB parsing SQL queries, Tim and I also differ here. I believe an SQL parser should extend the TextDB class, making the SQL parser a separate module, leaving the original TextDB class in tact, whereas Tim wants to modify the class somehow... I forget... Tim, did you want to add only one function to the TextDB class for to handle SQL queries or modify each function to handle SQL queries? |

While that's pretty impressive, it's would be much faster if you queried the records using just listRec($fp, 1, n), n being the number of records you want. listRec($fp, 1, n) is MUCH faster than a loop of listRec($fp, n++, 1), simply because listRec() has to find the position n, each time it's called, so you proccesses at O (n^2), instead of just O (log(2)n). Just thinking of the speed different between the two ![]() |
Quote: The big O notation is used to measure how fast algorithms (or in this case, the TextDB Query feature) runs at. And I made an educated guess with the O (log(2)n) (meaning there is no data to back it up). It's probably right ![]() |
|
THANK GOD!!
Anyways, I figured out that if you use listRec("fp", 1, n), it runs at O ( n ), where if you put listRec("fp", n++, 1) in a loop, it runs at O ( n^2 ), which is very bad. Just food for thought when you go to write your scripts
Also the new sorting Achive system I'm building will run at O ( log(2) n ), which is FASTER than O ( n ), so queries based on the archive will be faster, w00t! |

You upload the tdb front-end in a directory before the db directory.
Example: data directory: /home/www/path/to/data/dir you can upload it in "path", "to", "data", even "dir", but not /home/www/path/to/data/dir/some_directory. Furthermore, you can rename the "tdb.php" file to ANYTHING, and it will still work. You can't rename the directories. Also, the tdb.class.php that the tdb front-end uses is in the "inc" directory. So whenever you upgrade your tdb.class.php, you SHOULD also upgrade that one too. Good Luck, and happy bug hunting ![]() |
|
Yeah... It's such a pain to find the upb data directory b/c you need the path. But I would recommend keeping the password, only because it's the only line of security. |
In topic "Edit a file without locking it"
|
|
Having a fixed length system solves a lot of problems. Because we know the length of each record, we NEVER have to rewrite any portion of the table (but we do have to rewrite the REF file). Even with our variable length "memo" field type, which you can put any length of data in, when we store the data, we break it up into chunks, and remember the other of the chunks.
However if you wanna store it in a ready-to-read XML, the only way is to rebuild it everytime you edit it |
In topic "Edit record question"
|
|
Whenever you set fields to type "id" it's always going to be the same ID for that record. So if you want to edit a record based on the value of a field, you have to use query() or basicQueue() to retrieve the record, then use edit(), using a field, whose type is "id"
Quote: Use any field whose type is "id", there is a sort of "hidden ID" in textdb, that is only used internally in the class. It's the fileID, or the physical addresses of records (see __fileIdById() on the wiki). As far as which field to compare the id to, when you use functions that require a record ID, (edit, get, etc.) it looks up the record ID in the REF file. The REF file stores the order of the records, as well as which record ID belongs to which fileID, however when you use functions like query() and listRecs(), it will just compare field values. I hopw i answered your question effectively. I kind of gave more info than needed, so I'll just bold the things that you really want to know. |
|
Then you can't use functions like edit, or delete, and get, but you can still use query() and listRec(). No worries, even if someone did do that, you can use addfield() later to correctly add a type ID later (I believe this works, based on the last time I checked, although I recall this used to be buggy. Maybe Tim fixed it...) |
|
that's probably for the best. |
|
that's probably for the best. Also, as a side note,
PHP Code: if($fields[$i][1] == "memo") $fields[$i][2] = "10"; should be PHP Code:if($fields[$i][1] == "memo") $fields[$i][2] = "7"; It's a minor fix, and I've already fixed it for v5.1, however to save space, I'd recommend doing it now. |
|
no, it won't corrupt any databases, especially since it's only in the tdb::createTable() method. But it will save you 3 bytes per field set to type memo per record (which can add up quickly).
I did combine the two statements into one, but I thought it might be easier for you to change it the other way. |

Quote: It's called plagiarism. ![]() |

Well it's in 3 files to maximize efficiency. If you put it into one file and arn't careful about it, you're bound to either sacrafice performance, disk space, or both.
Also, the new TextDB 5.0.2 is very different from the TextDB from... let's say... 6 months ago. Also, TextDB also focuses on fragment control. If we didn't, we'd sacrafice performance. TextDB takes in an infinite length data (field type MEMO). If you input a float, our NUMBER field type will recognize it. However, we do not read arrays (because arrays can be complex...) Also commenting on the discussion from above. It's dangerous to read in the entire database into RAM. On most apache servers, PHP memory is limited to 8MB, so if you're database file is approaching 8 MB, it'd crash. It is also extremely wasteful to do this. Everytime you load the page, you read in the database, ranging from the complex queries, even to the simple, retreive-one-record queries. Quote:I tend to disagree with this statement. but depending on the query, sometimes this is true. Like I mentioned earlier, I wouldn't recommend reading in the database everytime you run the script, so if you are querying (using TextDB), you'd have to search through the records everytime. Some people might find this ineffective, however, while I was converting UPB 1 to UPB 2 (to use the new TextDB), I found it wasn't a problem. The real problem is finding the medium between the two extremes: queries doesn't use a lot of resourses (maybe looks through a small portion of the records) and does not require much of the database's attention or queries that are demanding (and might want to look at all records). You have to maximize your database for both cases. One way we've found a solution is to cache results of queries in the script in case they recall it again. We also cache the column and table information, and the REF file as well. |
Quote:I love developing databases. |

Actually, it's a little different than that...
Everytime you hit enter, it depends on what OS you have (Windows: "rn", Unix (and newer Macs): "n", and Older Macs: "r"), it will return a different line ending. In TextDB, it doesn't use new lines in it's organization. The only reason why it would have newlines in it, is if it's data in a record. |

Hi tomilpin,
I don't recommend attepting to retrieve records in the same execution as adding them. This is because PHP/Apache/OS caches the file information during each execution, so the script looking at the cached file, the recond really doesn't exist. There is one thing that seems to work some of the time, that might work for you. Right before you retrieve the the record(s), execute this php command, which clears the cached files: PHP Code: clearstatcache(); |
|
well, it is an interesting function, and the more I work with it, the stranger it gets. However check in the check() function in the tdb.class.php, for a clearstatcache() being called near the top. If it isn't there, rest assured I've put it in the next function. |

In topic "Rebuilding tables in V.5"
|
|
Well there isn't any existing method to do this (nor was there any method in the past, the reBuild function just moved records arround, it never modified them). The reason this method doesn't exist is simple. Look at it from our point of view. If record IDs updated themselves in the fashion you described, it wouldn't be very practical for a forum. For instance if you wanted to e-mail this topic thread to a friend you would send this: www.myupb.com/viewtopic.php?id=8&t_id=36&page=). The moment an admin deleted a topic from 1 to 35, the URL would change to www.myupb.com/viewtopic.php?id=8&t_id=35&page=, so when your friend clicked on the old link, he would get a completely different topic. The point I'm trying to make is that record IDs are specific to each record. If you were to update it everytime a record would delete it, not only would you get inconsistancies such as the one explained above, but you would also create more overhead, because you have to edit each record after the deleted one, to shift the ID number.
HOWEVER, if you are still persistant in updating the IDs, there may be a way. The recordID is used by users calling functions, such as get, edit, delete, etc. Internally, TextDB also utilizes a fileID, to track where in the textdb the record is located at, which can change when records are deleted. So we have the static, non-changable recordID, and we have the changable fileID, which updates automatically when records are deleted. One way you can utilize the fileID, is the function fileIdById. It takes in a $fp, and the recordID, and returns the fileID of the record. In order to retrieve that record, instead of using get(), use listRec($fp, $fileID, 1), which will list one record starting at the fileID. However you will still need to use the recordID for functions such as delete and edit. It might be more trouble than it's worth, but it's an alternative you might want to look into. Be careful, this will not work in tDB v 5.0 or later, as the textDB was restructured. You'll have to use tDB v4.3.5 if you wish to utilize the fileID in the mannor you specified. OR... if you know PHP, have a desire to learn and use textdb, you could create a custom class that extends tdb, and force it to utilize the fileID in most/all functions. |
|
tdb v5 development is parallel to upb development, so both are still in betas. you can find tdb v5 by downloading upb, and extracting the ./includes/class/tdb.class.php. |

Hi mrcityrunner,
There is indeed a Heisenbug in TDB. ... I've looked over the tdb.class.php, and I believe I've found and corrected 2 bugs. If you use the tdb.class.php from UPB v2.2.6, I believe I found one bug on line 1701 and line 1717. line 1701 DEscriptION: An if-then statement to check if the index pointing to the next entry of data pointed to itself. BUG: The if clause does not take into account that the file pointer is not at the beginning of the entry (offset = 7), due to reading the index itself line 1717: DEscriptION: This if-statement executes if data still needs to be written and all existing entries in the MEMO file are full and it must write to EOF. This if-statement props TDB to write at EOF by changing the index pointer of the entry it last wrote to to point to the entry of EOF. BUG: When writing the EOF index, it might right pad the index with an incorrect number of spaces, which may result in a corrupted index, which may result in data corruption. Sorry if this is a bit too technical for you, but I feel it's important to document the bugs I found since it can lead to data corruptions. If you want the short explanation, two variables had really similar names (last_blank_memo_block_reference and last_memo_block_reference). They're so similar that when I wrote the function, i used the wrong variable when I right padded and wrote the index to the MEMO file. IF YOU ARE GOING TO USE THIS FILE, PLEASE PERFORM YOU OWN DATA TESTS AND POST THE RESULTS HERE If you post the results here, I'll know the bug fixes were successful, and THEN we can update the SVN's copy of tdb.class.php. If you want some guidance to testing the file, create a test script or use a tdb-front end and do the following: Create a database and a table with two fields: one of type memo and one of type ID. Next add at least three records with any kind of data in the MEMO field. Next edit a memo field of ONE record Next add ONE new record with any kind of data in the MEMO field. Perform a listRec() and list all records Next delete ONE record Next add ONE new record with any kind of data in the MEMO field. Perform a listRec() and list all records If the tdb does not throw a fetal error, then the bugs are fixed. Offtopic: Note to self:

Your server does not support SMTP (the ability to send e-mails). Currently, there a work-around does not exist, however in the next version (which will be released VERY soon, Tim's told me all about it), your problem will be addressed. |
|
no.
lol.. I don't know how else to explain it. Your php uses the mail() function which calls the system's `mail` function, which stores the routing information that the e-mail must go through. Technically all e-mail on servers on done externally, however you need the correct settings to retrieve from the big mail server in the sky. (At least I think) |

Login as an Admin, go to the Admin Panel -> Config Settings -> Newly Registered Members Settings.
Look for "Register Email Message". Make sure you have both the <login> and <password> tag in your message. To fix the getpass.php (because registered_globals is forcably off), download this, and upload it in your upb main directory. |

Could you delete the ".htaccess" in the data directory? I'd like to look at which files are created. Do you know which step these errors occured on? Also could you create a file called "phpinfo.php" with the contents PHP Code: <?php phpinfo(); ?> |
|
Okay, According to the phpinfo.php, you have safe_mode ON locally. So, hopefully it's fixable. Try this:
[number]Create a file called .htaccess in the upb main directory with the contents PHP Code: php_flag safe_mode Off [small](My .htaccess format is a little rusty, so you might want to verify this..)[/small][/number]
[number]Delete config.php and upload a fresh copy[/number] [number]Follow the installation instructions from the readme from here on[/number] And that should do it... |
|
RE DoneZone:
UPB has an easy installation 90% of the time. The other 10% is when the server isn't configured correctly, so you have to do something like this. Or you have to accomodate for servers that don't have STMP, etc. |
|
You have to contact your web service provider and ask them to turn safe_mode OFF or ask them to allow the .htaccess.
Alternatively, I don't know if this will work, but you might give it a shot. Create a PHP file to create the .htaccess. It might work. Here is how I would impliment it: Create a file called htaccess.php and put it in the UPB main directory with the contents: PHP Code: <?php
$f = fopen("./.htaccess", 'w'); $f = fwrite("php_flag safe_mode Off"); fclose($f); print "Done!"; ?> Afterwards, visit the page. If it worked, it will only say "Done!" otherwise, it will give you errors, and you can post them here so we can work through it. |

Go to the Admin Panel, Go to Manage Categories, and Add a Category. Then Add a forum in the "Manage Forum" Link in the Admin Panel, and Add a Forum to that Category. Quote: Leander at Feb 22, 2009 8:31:09 pm This error is a very serious error that the myupb or tdb cannot recover from. (You're screwed basically) As for chmod'ing config.php to 777. This is bad (and shouldn't be needed)... at least after installation. PHP doesn't need php files to have the executable bit set for it to run (I personally think this is a horrible security flaw, but what the hey). The reason you want to chmod to 644 or at least 666, is because an attacker could write to config.php if they gained some sort of access to your system. Since all the sensitive files are obscured in data_**** and uploads_***, except for config.php, you want to limit the access to config.php. You definitely don't want config.php chmoded to a 5 or a 7, because then the attacker could write assembly / C / Perl / etc and could potentially cause even more harm. |

I'm not sure if you know this, but a lot of thought has been put into the data directory of upb 2.0. Doing a fresh install will randomize your data directory to data_************* so that crackers cannot simply visit the db directory and expect access to DAT files. You can try to rename files, however you will need an excellent understanding of TDB and UPB2. ATTEMPTING TO RENAME DATA FILES WITHOUT KNOWING WHAT YOU ARE DOING COULD DAMAGE YOUR FORUM, so it is strongly recommended you backup your data files before attempting to do so.
That being said, it sounds like a lot of work, renaming the data files to gain protection, when suficient protection is already in place. You're welcome to try tho ![]() |

theoritically it can stall, but in TextDB's case, I am confident it won't (at least no for a very long time).
The way TextDB is structured allows it to be (in my mind) limitless. That coupled with how it manages data, like the shuffling and resorting you were talking about (which just moves a few bytes of data around), makes TextDB wonderful. If you would like the technical stuff on how this all happens, Pilot and I can gladly give it to you. |
|
Oh, are you talking about...
I understand what you mean now Pilot. That one day when you were talking to me about the listRec() return arrays... I just realized that's how sortAndBuild() sorts! (which btw needs to be renamed to just "sort()" because it no longer builds ![]() |
|
Actually our sort function does put everything in an array. But I think I have a solution to that. I need to talk to Tim about it first. Seeing how it's my idea, I'd like TextDB to have it before the public does ![]() |
In topic "Forum failure after moving to new server"
|

Alright...
If you still have your old config.php, you can still repair your old data directory. All you have to do is CHMOD your data directory to 777, and it's contents to 666. The reason you have to change permissions is because the usergroup or username for PHP (which is the only thing that accesses the data directory) changed or is no longer valid. So the alternative is to discover what the new usergroup and username PHP uses to access files. On a side note, I see you are using PHP5. UPB does not officially support PHP5 yet. The reason being is that in PHP5, they've updated their OOP, but TextDB is configured for PHP4, because most servers still run PHP4. However many users have reported that UPB has worked on their PHP5 servers. So after you fix the data directory problem, you'll know whether your server will run UPB. |
|
1. Is it the same error or a different one?
Are you refreshing the script? If you navigate away from it, or press the refresh button, you will get the error. Also please replace your actual data directory with data_***********************. It's a security risk to post it. You can keep the last bit after the period, so we know it's a different folder. |

Right... you have to open the CSS file and change it there. The CSS file for the default skin is located in ./skins/default/CSS/skin.css. Causion: When you open, it's actually a PHP file, so be careful with quotes. |

This would be possible if Tim adapted the acl permission functionality. The Access Control List (ACL) lets users set access to their files/directories based on "rlidwka", which stands for "read", "list", "insert"?, "delete", "write", "admin" and... I forgot what the "k" was. |
|
hmmm I suppose it's when I finish the new $_STATUS, which will be right after I finish the new sorting archive for tdb 5.1
... but honestly the new $_STATUS wil be easy... Oh but then again, tim started converting the PHP files to use template files, so... yeah.. we really can't put a date on it yet.. |

In topic "security issue"
|
|
Hi pete917, First off, you should backup your database before trying anything mentioned below. Basically, if install.php created the data folder (which it should), and you wanna be paranoid about security, you can chmod the data dir to 700. 700 means that the forum can still access the databases, but absolutely no one else (through FTP or SSH)can either(including you). That being said, your database is still accessible through the web browser. This is because apache (the web server) owns your data directory, and since apache serves the web pages, and the data directory acts like a web page when accesses through a web browser. This is why the random bits attached to the data dir is there. It helps protect your data through obscurity. Not the best method of security, but it's the easiest in this case. If you set it to 755, the forum can still access the databases, and you (and everyone else) can read it (though FTP or SSH). Your best bet is to create the .htaccess file in your data dir (.htaccess limits the accessibility of user requests THROUGH apache), and deny everybody, then chmod your data dir to 700 or 755. Anyone know the correct .htaccess content to accomplish this? I can't remember it ![]() |

For topic notification bug fix, read here. It's great that you were able to solve this solution! Just one thing: The next major release of tDB (the engine that myupb is powered on) will be going through a major revision that will certainly break your script. You see, the headers will be moving out of the TA files and be stored together in the TDB* file. So you see, when you add members, only one of your databases will be updated, and then when another user is added at a different domain, they will have conflicting IDs, and you'll encounter a significant loss of data and corruption of your members table. if you don't plan on changing your system, I would check the changelogs for major tdb changes before you decide to update in the future |

** updated master copy of UPB2.0 to include the readme.txt changes **
As for your e-mail RE change request, I'm a little hesitant. Sure, I know some free email services allow you to append a plus sign followed by a string, and it will delivery it to your main e-mail account, but think of the side effects of doing that. The forum would not be able to differentiate whether or not a user has registered with that e-mail account, because users can easily change the string. We do not allow users to register with an existing e-mail account to prevent spammers and etc. So please understand our position. If you can write some code to replace our current e-mail duplication coding that will ignore the string between the plus sign (and including the plus sign) and the at sign, I would be more than willing to consider the RE change request. |
|

Yeah, the same is with myupb.com, but I believe gmail allows you to use the plus sign followed by random text
i.e. my gmail is rebles@gmail.com. I will still recieve mail if I give someone the email address rebles+junkmail@gmail.com, and the reason why they allow this is because you can create a filter for the rebles+junkmail@.com if you feel you are getting junk mail through that "pipe" |

It's not that easy:
1: Delete the post, if it's not the last post, END 2: Get the second to last post (now the last post) and UPDATE the the topic's last_topic and user information 3: Run sortAndBuild() (or the make a custom function to do the equivolent) sortAndBuild(), which shouldn't really be run every time you make a new post, uses a lot of resources. I guess with the new sorting archive I'm making, it might be okay, but I'm trying to avoid running sortAndBuild() if I don't need to. |

Hmmm, The only explanation I can think of, that guests came within the 5 minutes of the user refreshing the page, and knocked him off the first page of the IP log. note that the IP Log is only updated for the index.php (and register.php?) And the whose online is updated everytime the user visited any new page. --Rebles |
|
You can change that if you wish, however, I believe the ip log would become unless, because it would reach it's max size, and data would refresh the ip log several times over in a single day, unless you wrote to the ip log on the first visit, and tracked the user for that one session. But there are ways to get around this, so Im not sure it would be very useful. |

If you're getting it through a service, contact your service provider and find out if they've done any updates to the OS or PHP or the apache that might affect file permissions for PHP scripts. TO Pilot: Was the banned users module added <= 1.6? As for backing up your files, if you don't have shell access, use a FTP program like SmartFTP, and download the entire db directory onto your computer. if I had to guess, your FTP program renames files with capital letters to lower case. Open your FTP program and rename sorttopics.php to sortTopics.php. Post another topic in the same forum, and with any luck IF sortTopic.php uses records in the ID.dat file instead of ID_sorted.dat file, you haven't lost your your topic. |

In topic "Wondered how to put in a snippet of code to make like 6 anchors on index.php"
|
|
Creating anchors for each of the categories, huh? It sounds like you are trying to create a "viewcat.php", which is totally cool.
Let me give you some pointers that I think might be useful to your cause: Basically, I think the best way to impliment anchors, would be to create a "viewcat.php" page, which will basically be PHP code snippets taken from index.php (probably). To create the new pages, You will need to include some basic UPB files. If you are using UPB 2 <= 2.1.1b, You will need to add these lines to the beginning of the page: PHP Code: require_once('./includes/class/func.class.php');
require_once('./includes/header.php'); If you are using UPB 1, You will have to use these lines instead: PHP Code: include "func.inc.php";
include "header.php"; You'll have to verify that Category ID in the query string is valid with a line like this (UPB v2): PHP Code: if(!isset($_GET["id"]) || !is_numeric($_GET["id"])) exitPage("Invalid Category ID");
Then you have to get the category record using a command like this (UPB v2): PHP Code: $category = $tdb->get('cats', $_GET['id']);
To retrieve the forums of the category, you're going to have to loop through the forums ID in the "sort" element, like so: PHP Code: $forumIDArray = explode(',', $category[0]['sort']);
while(!empty($forumIDArray)) { $forumID = shift($forumIDArray); if($forumID != "" || !is_numeric($forumID)) continue; $record = $tdb->get('forum", $forumID); //Add index.php snippets here to make it work, you will have to rename variables so they match. } If you have faith in the code, you can use this pretty blindly. If you don't have a lot of PHP experience, you'll probably run into a lot of Errors, just reply back here with the errors, and your source code, and we'll try to debug together. The above code, is all the backend stuff. I didn't bother with processing data/output, because it's all there in the index.php. Again, if you have trouble locating the necessary coding, reply here again, and me or other fellow staff members will be happy to asssist you. Happy Modding! Also, if you do manage to get it working, post a reply here, and upload or link your source code, so that others requesting anchors can utilize it aswell (without duplicating coding). |
In topic "Issue after installation."

Hi ibdilbert,
The issue with the IP Address Log is it's not using global variables like $_SERVER['PHP_SELF']. If you are PHP savvy, this can be fixed by editing the last portion in index.php, to reference the correct variable, otherwise, look foward to the next release (Btw I thought I already fixed this!) Your next issue is wanting to control registered users. While there isn't anyway to do this yet, nor is there plan to, I will certainly add it to the TODO list. Your next issue is talking about different user groups and permissions to different forums. This is in our plans! In fact in our next major revision, we have been working to implement this into the core of UPB. Unfortunately, this is not slated for the next release, and I cannot say when this will be pushed into a public release. I hope this answers your questions, and I sorry we couldn't be more accommodating. Look forward to the next revision which will be soon! |

What Deanus says is true. If you want the scripts in different directories, you have to change all the directory names in the mod_news.php (ex: includes/class/tdb.class.php to ../myupb/includes/class/tdb.class.php). Furthermore, you have to modify the tdb.class.php's tdb() method to not strip out ".." at the beginning of directories or it won't work. |

yeah, which is the same thing as deleting the line. |

Actually, looking at the coding (message_icons() in ./includes/inc/post.inc.php), I noticed this:
You can upload up to 100 icons. It doesn't even have to be incremental. You can have "iconhm.gif" and it will still display it. Here are the only requirements: The filename begins with "icon" The file extension is either gif or jpg (lowercase) You MUST have "icon1.gif" (you can replace the file, but it must exist) You can use any 2 character between "icon" and the file extension and that's it Hope that helps! |
In topic "Adding UPB to Joomla CMS Possible?"
|
|
Hi deanus,
This could be feasible, if you know where to replace the coding. Basically, you'd have to get rid of the members table, the login, logout, register, profile script. That's just the basics. If you get rid of the members table, you have to look through all of UPB's coding, for when it setFp->('members', users');, then you'd have to replace it with SQL, and replace all the UPB's member's fields with the appropriate Joomla field. Also, like Clark mentioned, you have do something about the login process. I recommend using Joomla's cookies/method of validation to validate the user. |
|
